Millie was a morbidly peculiar, little girl — constantly dressed in a white, cotton nightgown with ruffles, and barefoot as she meandered down the streets of her small, quaint town. Her coal-black hair fell limp against the small of her back, swaying at an eerie pace with the wind whistling through the trees. She whistled along with the trees, setting an uneasy feeling among the townspeople as they watched her go with wary expressions on their faces. Her lips were always curved into a cold smile, and her dark eyes looked entirely lifeless. Her porcelain skin was deathly pale, and her feet were blistered and bruised from the harsh gravel of the streets.

The townspeople called her Meandering Millie, for no one’s ever seen her do anything but meander at a morbidly tranquil pace through their streets, like a ghastly ghost haunting the town’s land and its people.

The only way they could sense her coming was through the jingling of the gold medal she constantly wore against her other gold necklace. It could clank against the metal, and its shimmering light against the bright sun would blind the people passing by.

Meandering Millie’s medal was like a warning bell to the townsfolk — it was an integral part of survival to them. People quite often believed Millie was an evil spirit that will go on for centuries meandering through the town’s street and terrorizing it’s people. Without that medal, one could never see her coming; she was far too quiet and small.

Millie had won this medal when she participated in the annual awards show of their town, and the Mayor decided with the town’s board that they would give away award medals to children who have left an impact on their town. He wanted to provide the children with hope and purpose, and to instill upon them a sense of accomplishment and a vision for their futures — for they are the leaders of the future.

It was a brilliant idea to give Meandering Millie a medal with the other children of the town. At the time, the board believed that if they awarded her with something, she would change her path and become … normal. Instead, Millie used it to add a tune to her tranquil humming and the trees whistling. The townspeople used the clanking sound as a warning bell to steer clear of the street Millie was currently haunting.

No one could ever wager how Millie would turn out in the future. Would she even grow to begin with, or was she truly a ghost that never ages?

For now, Meandering Millie’s fate is undecided, and her medal kept her in solitude and whatever form of peace she felt.
