Meandering Peace
There is peace in not quite knowing where you will end up.
As you go on a retreat to recharge your emotional and mental batteries, you soon discover that there is more to life than following a strict guideline that gravitates around your success. We’ve always been told to work hard, and to have a set plan to follow. However, it is often the case that none of us truly know what we are doing as we roam this earth.
You came to this epiphany as you reached a glittering river, its shimmering waters moving at a steady linear pace and a few fish would occasionally leap up into the air, wag their tails, before plopping back into the water and resume their travels. You stood in awe by the wonderful sight before you. Feeling your mouth demanding to be quenched of its thirst, you hunched down to the ground, and allowed your hands to touch the cool, flowingly clear liquid. You cupped your hands to carry the water, and brought it up to your lips, before you stopped moving as something caught your eye in the distance.
It was a piece of drift wood, meandering across the river aimlessly, at a mellow pace. Your eyes moved along with it, observing it as it scraped the side of a jutting rock, and redirecting its course to move the opposite side as a result. As the drift wood floated to the side, the water gently transported it across its body, and your eyes slightly widened as you saw it come closer in your direction.
However, before it could, a fish jumped out of the water, causing a ripple that drove the drift wood away from you, and moving it in the opposite direction of yourself.
You smiled softly to yourself as you admired the way something so simple as a piece of drift wood calmly accepted its uncontrollable fate, allowed the universe to move it on its own accord, and paving its journey on its behalf. You then felt your mind click, and you decided that if this drift wood reached you, you would make an ultimate life-changing decision.
Sitting cross-legged on the shores of the flowing river, your eyes intently watched the drift wood move back and forth with the current, redirecting its route several times, before it slowly began its journey towards you. You grinned, taking this as a sign from the universe that you were about to make a significant decision very soon. Before you knew it, the drift wood had reached you, its sharp edges tickling your knee as it arrived to its destination, and you let out a laugh of relief.
You were hoping this wandering piece of drift wood would come to you, because now, you can freely decide to become a piece of drift wood as well (metaphorically, of course). It was this journey which allowed your eyes to widen in perspective, and realise that there is a tremendous peace in letting the forces of the universe gravitate you towards what you are meant to have. You would let go of the things you can’t control, and let life redirect you in the correct path. You will no longer fight the current of the waterfall of life.
You will be as peaceful and serene as that piece of drift wood.
